TMS Q & A

TMS Therapy at Hopewell Health Solutions

Hopewell Health Solutions offers transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy (TMS) as part of our suite of state-of-the-art mental health treatments. Transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy is a breakthrough technology that treats mental health conditions that do not respond to conventional psychiatric treatments, such as medication or talk therapy. TMS is a safe, painless, and noninvasive outpatient treatment that stimulates healthy brain activity and reduces the long-term symptoms of many mental health disorders.

What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a safe, outpatient treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate brain areas affected by conditions like depression or OCD. It begins with a psychiatric evaluation and brain mapping to target the right brain area. TMS sessions are short, painless, and done on an outpatient basis. The magnetic pulses stimulate brain activity, improving functions like mood control and helping the brain return to a healthy state.

Hopewell Health Solutions is a provider of NeuroStar transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) technology. Depression is typically treated with antidepressants that work by influencing various systems in the body to provide relief. In contrast, NeuroStar Advanced TMS targets the root cause of depression—your brain. Certain areas of your brain are responsible for regulating mood. When synapses in these areas become underactive, connections are disrupted, leading to depression. TMS stimulates these inactive synapses, essentially "awakening" the brain to restore its natural function.

Uses for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy:

Treatment-Resistant Major Depression: Close to half of individuals diagnosed with clinical depression will be labeled as “non-responsive” at some point during their lives. Individuals with non-responsive or treatment-resistant depression do not improve with antidepressants or talk-therapy alone. Prior to the invention of TMS, treatment options for severe depression were limited to aggressive therapies like electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). TMS is a safer alternative to ECT, with less side-effects and higher successful outcomes.

Treatment-Resistant OCD: NeuroStar TMS is cleared by the FDA to treat obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). As with major depression, OCD treatment using transcranial stimulation technology consists of a series of short sessions that stimulate neural activity in the prefrontal cortex. Treatment is done on an outpatient basis, without the need for hospitalization. NeuroStar OCD boasts high success-rates with few to no side effects.

The TMS Treatment Process

Step 1: Mapping

  • During your treatment, you will remain awake and alert while our device delivers magnetic pulses to specific areas of your brain. We begin by performing a motor threshold test to identify the ideal magnetic field strength for your treatment. A gentle magnetic pulse will cause a movement in your thumb, helping us tailor the treatment just for you.

Step 2: Treatment

  • Once we’ve mapped your treatment, you’ll begin your first 18-45 minute session. Many patients find the sensation similar to light tapping on their scalp, which can take a little getting used to. If you feel discomfort at any point, simply let us know, and we’ll adjust the treatment for your comfort.

Step 3: After Treatment

  • After your session, you can leave and resume your normal activities immediately—there’s no downtime required. Whether you’re heading back to work or enjoying time with family, you can continue your day as usual.

83% of patients who completed TMS therapy experienced relief from their depression.

62% of patients went into full remission, with complete relief from depression.
